THIS WEEK'S MOVE

Doesn't make money.

It protects it.

Hey —

John here.

Over the last few weeks, we've been building. We looked at what you already own. What you already know. What you could turn into something useful online.

Today we're doing something different. We're protecting it.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. And that's good timing. Because the more of your financial life you move online, the more important a few basic habits become.

Two-minute read.

Reply LOCKED when you've done today's three.

The Quick Version

Tuesday you locked down your email. Today:

  1. Save the backup codes.

  2. Turn on money alerts.

  3. Create a family safe word.

That's it. No giant cybersecurity checklist. No panic. Three small moves that make you harder to fool.

LOCK 1

Save the keys.

Tuesday you turned on two-step sign-in. Now make sure you don't lock yourself out.

If the service gives you backup or recovery codes, save them somewhere safe and offline.

Don't leave them sitting in a photo on your phone. Don't email them to yourself. Know where they are.

Because protecting an account isn't very useful if you can't get back into it either.

LOCK 2

Make your money make noise.

Open your bank app and the payment apps you use. Turn on alerts for money moving in or out. Purchases. Transfers. Withdrawals. Whatever your app allows.

The goal is simple: if something moves, you know.

You don't need to stare at your bank account all day. Let the account tell you.

LOCK 3

Create one family safe word.

AI can imitate voices. That means the frantic phone call that sounds like someone you love deserves one extra step.

Pick a word or phrase only your family knows. Then make one rule:

Urgent request for money? Call back on the number you already have and ask for the word.

Not the number they give you. Not the link they send. The one already in your phone.

That's a five-minute conversation that could matter someday.

The Cashflow Check™

I cut a Money Move this week.

The original idea: learn this setup, then charge other people to help secure their accounts.

I ran it through the Cashflow Check. It didn't pass.

Too much responsibility. Too much chance of becoming the person somebody calls when they're locked out six months later. And not enough repeatable income to justify your nights.

So I cut it.

What passed: protect yours. And if your mom, dad, or someone you trust needs help, help them. For free. They click. You guide. You never see their passwords or codes. Money stays off the table.

Sometimes the smartest Money Move isn't finding another way to make money. It's protecting what you've already worked for.

This weekend:

Fifteen minutes. That's all this takes.

Step 1

Save the backup codes somewhere offline.

Step 2

Turn on money alerts in every account you use.

Step 3

Text your family the safe word. Explain the rule.

Then stop. You don't need to become a cybersecurity expert. You just need to make yourself a little harder to hit.

Tuesday we tightened the first door. Today we tightened three more.

Reply LOCKED when you're done.

Lock it down.
